Dossiê temático: «A Arte da Talha»

O CITCEM – Centro de Investigação Transdisciplinar Cultura, Espaço e Memória convida ao envio de propostas de artigos para a sua revista CEM – Cultura, Espaço & Memória, n.º 19, 1.º semestre de 2025, subordinada ao tema «A Arte da Talha». Este número da revista enquadra-se no campo de ação das Linhas de Investigação «Património Material e Imaterial» e «Sociabilidades e práticas religiosas».

O presente dossiê temático pretende contribuir para cruzar o plano de ação de linhas de investigação do CITCEM que tocam aspetos da materialidade e da intangibilidade dos patrimónios e os seus usos e representações na diacronia.

A talha, em madeira, constitui um dos principais elementos do património cultural integrado e móvel da História da Arte portuguesa. Geralmente associada à retabulística e aos espaços sacros católicos, a sua disseminação a ambientes mundanos, sobretudo nos séculos XVII e XVIII, a sua aplicação em estruturas efémeras e a sua importância enquanto desenho e expressão de morfologias arquitetónicas, tornam a talha um dos principais bens dos patrimónios culturais português, ibérico e europeu.

A Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto foi pioneira no estudo da talha e da retabulística, deixando uma marca historiográfica sobre o tema, que importa recordar e rever. Impõe-se, pois, revisitar e refletir sobre esse legado e abrir novos caminhos e novas formas de ver, analisar e interpretar sobre este modo de fazer, para o qual convergiam práticas e ofícios tão diversos como os do entalhe, da carpintaria, do douramento e da pintura, entre outros.

Serão acolhidos artigos que se debrucem sobre: revisão da literatura temática, retabulística e artes associadas, o conhecimento sobre talha produzido por historiadores académicos e não académicos; a história da produção e das instituições e comitentes, os equipamentos, o património integrado e o edificado associado à talha; a conservação, o restauro e musealização da talha; leituras interdisciplinares sobre a talha e outras artes.

• A Arte da Talha: fontes, produtores, instituições e indivíduos comitentes e fiéis;
• Equipamentos artísticos no espaço sacro/património integrado e móvel;
• O Desenho e a Arquitetura do Retábulo;
• Conservação, restauro e musealização da talha;
• Leituras interdisciplinares e intermediais: a talha e as outras artes e a talha e os meios de divulgação (tratadística, memorialística, etc).

A aceitação dos textos estará sujeita a peer review.

Para além do dossiê temático, a revista CEM aceita outros estudos na secção Vária assim como notícias e recensões críticas.

Thematic dossier: “The Art of Carving”

This issue of the journal is part of the “Material and Immaterial Heritage” and “Sociabilities and Religious Practices” Lines of Research.
This thematic dossier aims to contribute to crossing the action plan of CITCEM’s lines of research that touch on aspects of the materiality and intangibility of heritage and its uses and representations in diachrony.
Wood carving is one of the main elements of the integrated and mobile cultural heritage of Portuguese art history.
Generally associated with Catholic altarpieces and sacred spaces, its spread to mundane environments, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, its application in ephemeral structures and its importance as a design and expression of architectural morphologies, make woodcarving one of the main assets of Portuguese, Iberian and European cultural heritage.
The Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto was a pioneer in the study of carving and retabulism, leaving a historiographical mark on the subject that should be remembered and revisited.
We therefore need to revisit and reflect on this legacy and open up new paths and new ways of seeing, analyzing and interpreting this way of doing things, in which practices and crafts as diverse as carving, carpentry, gilding and painting, among others, converged.
We welcome articles on: a review of the thematic literature, retabulistics and associated arts, the knowledge on carving produced by academic and non-academic historians; the history of production and of institutions and patrons, equipment, integrated heritage and buildings associated with carving; the conservation, restoration and musealization of carving; interdisciplinary readings on carving and other arts.

• The Art of Woodcarving: Sources, Producers, Institutions and Individual Clients and Loyalists;
• Artistic equipment in the sacred space/integrated and mobile heritage;
• The Design and Architecture of the Retable;
• Conservation, restoration and musealization of woodcarvings;
• Interdisciplinary and intermediate readings: woodcarving and the other arts and woodcarving and the means of dissemination (treatises, memorials, etc.).

Acceptance of texts will be subject to peer review. In addition to the thematic dossier, CEM accepts other studies in the Various section, as well as news and critical reviews.  THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS IS 30-09-2024.Accepted languages: Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.
